A group of reconstructed entry-level portfolios, reverse-engineered from the present-day practice of four contemporary New Zealand artists. The folios replicate in detail the mechanical exercises prescribed for this high school examination and the admirable efforts of the students to circumvent these excessive restrictions. Inasmuch as the folios were centred on syllabus they were also an attempt to re-engage adolescent emotion. To do this the syllabus was subjected to a kind of raw primal chemistry - to digest it and break it down - what emerged was a range of embellishments. Within the narrow confines of the prescribed exercises deviations emerged and collectively these could be described as a de-sublimation of the approved curriculum.
